Since the Manx Grand Prix, formerly known as The Amateur TT, started in 1923
many riders have been brought together not only to compete but to form friendships
which have lasted lifetimes. In recognition of this an inaugural meeting
of the Manx Grand Prix Riders Association was held on lst September, 1974
which was attended by 50 members including Wilf Harding, Harold Rowell, Jack
Harding, George Costain, and Eddie Crooks who went on to serve on the first
committee.
The objects of the Association were clear and simple. These were to foster "fellowship" amongst
anyone who had qualified and started in the Manx Grand Prix. It was not to interfere
in anyway in the government of the sport.
The Association holds a social function during Manx Grand Prix week which this
year will be held immediately after the Annual General Meeting in the beer tent
at the rear of the Grandstand on the Sunday between practice and race weeks.
The Association shares with the TT Riders Association the portacabin at the rear
of the TT Grandstand known as the 38th Milestone. During the races this is open
to members (and their friends?!) and is run by the cheerful Frances, wife of
past President Tom Thorp. Food, drink and conversation are always in
good supply.
One other very important means of communication has been the newsletter which
is distributed free to its members three times a year. In recent years this has
been prepared by Keith Trubshaw and Jim Hunter and has contained several scoops
before they broke in the national press.
If you are a present or former rider in the Manx Grand Prix, and wish to continue
to enjoy the fellowship of other competitors, why not join the Association? Life
membership costs £10 (other donations gratefully received). You may join by seeing
Frances Thorp at the 38th Milestone or contacting our Secretary, Keith |
