Post Classic FAQ

Please see below responses to questions that competitors building machines for the Post Classic Races have asked:

I have acquired a 1984 GPZ 900 with the intent to prepare for the Post Classic Manx GP next year. Can we use a pattern race type fairing obviously similar to those used in the 80's or do we have to use copies of the original fairings so the bike looks like the original as the current Supersport/Superbikes do?

Answer: the fitting of pattern fairings was acceptable at the time so therefore this would be perfectly acceptable now. Good luck!

Can I fit 17" wheels to my XR69?

Answer: Yes. 17" wheels were available and used in 1985 therefore they can be used. There is no restriction on width of wheel. In keeping with the "spirit of the event", wheels should be of a type available in 1985.

Can I fit a quick shifter gear change mechanism to my 1991 TZ250?

Answer: as far as we are aware quick shift gear change mechanisms did not become commercially available until 1992, therefore they would not be eligible. However, as in all such matters, if a competitor wishes to use particular cycle parts the onus is on them to show that these parts were available and used in the period.

Can I use tyre warmers?

Answer: in the interests of safety, yes.

Are there any restrictions regarding which barrels I can use on my 1991 V Twin TZ250 Yamaha?

Answer: Yes. The only eligible barrels are the 1991 type, clearly marked 3YL. Any barrels not marked 3YL (6 as opposed to 4 transfer ports) would not be acceptable.

Can I fit 17" wheels to my 1985 Suzuki GSXR 750?

Answer: Yes. 17" wheels were available and used in 1985 therefore they can be used. There is no restriction on width of wheel. In keeping with the "spirit of the event", wheels should be of a type available in 1985. Of course the same applies to all makes of machine, not just GSXR's!

Can I fit 43mm" conventional (not upside down) forks to my Suzuki GSXR 750?

Answer: Kayaba 43mm forks were used on the 1985 Heron Suzuki TSR05 fitted with an external damping reservoir. If your forks are of similar type to this then that would be acceptable. Note however, that this would not allow the use of 1988 Suzuki GSXR 43mm forks (as used on the GSXR J model) because these had both compression and rebound damping and are therefore of a different type to that available in 1985.

In 1990 Suzuki reverted to a longer stroke 749cc GSXR engine of the type used in the 1985 machines. Can I use one of these engines?

Answer:
No. Besides the external differences in appearance of the oil filter fitting and raised engine number on the casing, the 1990 engines used shimmed tappets as opposed to the screw and lock nut type used on the '85 model (the type of tappet adjustment alone would not be a reason for non eligibility).

Is it acceptable to use an ignition system taken from a later machine?

Answer: Yes, this would be acceptable.

Can I fit a 1986 GSXR 750 swinging arm to 1985 GSXR?

Answer: Yes this would be acceptable. As there were no material changes to the GSXR 750 models F/G/H available in either 1985, 1986 or 1987 the use of complete machines, or components therefrom, is acceptable.

I am riding a 600 Kawasaki in the Junior class. Can I change the front brake calipers and discs? How about the anti dive (so popular in this period) on the forks legs - can they be blanked off and removed or at least rendered inoperable?

Answer: brake calipers and discs can be changed but should be of a type available in 1985. The anti - dive can be removed or made inoperable (as it was in the period).
