I raced in the 1979 MGP and followed this by riding in the 1980 TT for the first time using my 250cc TZ Yamaha to finish 30th in a shortened and delayed race due to bad weather.
Good job too as the TZ developed a problem on the 3rd lap and would not have made any more! I also raced a 3 1/2 (350cc vee twin) Moto Morini in the F3 event. The bike is actually my wife’s, which she loaned out following a road crash, and was race prepared by North Leicester Motors. Following the TT I restored the Morini and Christine having owned it from new in 1978 still runs it! Does this qualify me to ride it in the parade lap??
I returned in 1981 sponsored by Elby Moto to ride a Moto Morini (no. 89) in the F3 and a 900cc Benelli six (no 66) in the F1. The Morini was tuned and fitted with 400cc barrels and air suspension. Practice was fraught with problems and the Morini was never able to run at full power until race day. The result was a fast bike that matched the Yamahas but which shattered the rear piston on the Cronk ny Voddy on lap 1.
The Benelli similarly had problems and it was only possible to do one lap in practice. It ran well and sounded even better in the race but two slow pit stops caused a poor result being classified as 34th out of 35 finishers.
As far as I know I am the last person to race a Moto Morini or a Benelli 900 six in the Island.
